mic AG: Big success for μ-GPS Optics GmbH at Hannover Messe
(PresseBox) (Munich, )μ-GPS Optics GmbH, one of the portfolio companies of Munich-based mic AG, successfully introduced its prototype of an innovative 3D measuring system at Hannover Messe. The measuring technique enables a faster, more precise and cost-efficient installation process for machine tools. The μ-GPS technology determines all necessary coordinates with absolute accuracy and is - thanks to its patented optical 3D measuring system - significantly superior to traditional measuring techniques.
"The very positive reaction from trade visitors is proof of the technological lead that distinguishes μ-GPS from classical measuring systems", says Claus-Georg Müller, mic AG‟s chief executive. "μ-GPS Optics GmbH will start serial production soon. This will be the foundation for the success of yet another of mic AG‟s early-phase investments", emphasizes Manuel Reitmeier, CFO at mic AG.
μ-GPS Optics GmbH specializes in extremely precise 3D optical measurements in the 1-5 μm range, requiring distinctly shorter measuring time than conventional methods. With the μ-GPS product, exact positioning for precision machines can be controlled. The principle behind the laser GPS system is similar to GPS (Global Positioning System) and is applied to an optical measuring system. The system was developed in partnership with Carl Zeiss AG, especially for application in engineering.
The advantage for customers: the time for installation or adjustment, which would previously have taken several days, can now be reduced to a few hours. This is achieved through the rapid adaptation of the measuring technique to customer-specific requirements plus machine acceptance processes that are largely automated. This results in cost and time savings as well as easy handling and a high level of flexibility.
For its implementation of the research results, μ-GPS won the Thuringian Business Competition in 2006. In 2008, the innovative high-tech company received further accolades: it won a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Inventors in Nuremberg, at which 700 inventions from 32 countries were unveiled.
