TQM5329 - A power-saving ColdFire CPU with an integrated SVGA-LCD controller

With the new TQM5329, TQ-Components has introduced a small, cost-effective module with a CPU of the ColdFire family
(PresseBox) (Weßling, ) This module is based on the MCF5329 by Freescale and represents an optimum core for applications involving man/machine interfaces and industrial control due to its high interfacing capacity, small size and low power consumption.

The power-saving MCF5329 microcontroller with a ColdFire V3 CPU offers extensive on-chip peripherals. The following are available for communication with the outside world: a 10/100Mbit fast Ethernet controller, USB host/USB OTG controller, three UARTs and a FlexCAN controller for CAN 2.0B, and even an LCD controller for displays up to a SVGA resolution. Other functional units can be incorporated in the system via a FlexBus with DMA, QSPI, und I2C. The performance of the ColdFire processor is provided by a very efficient CPU with a high MIPS/W (approximately 211 Dhrystone MIPS@240MHz), additional DSP-like eMAC commands, an ingenious system architecture.

The TQM5329 offers the processor up to 128 Mbyte working memory and up to 64 Mbyte NOR-Flash for the program and data. The module also has EEPROM, a supervisor/watchdog and a real-time clock that can be battery-buffered from the main board. All externally useful processor signals are available from robust industrial plug connectors in a 0.8 mm grid. One of the board s selling points is its small size of 54 x 44 mm2. The standard distance from the module to the motherboard is 5 mm. The required installation area for the board is less than 9 mm on the carrier board. A major goal of development was to ensure long availability of the components and high reliability under unfavorable conditions.

Linux drivers are available for the interfaces. A flexible boot loader (U-Boot) allows you to download kernel and ramdisk images, network booting and system diagnosis. U-Boot unpacks and starts the Linux kernel while the system starts.

Debugging tools are available for software development. BDM/JTAG accesses enable comfortable and efficient software development.

The basis board can be used for fast and easy startup. The plug and play principle can be used during software development even when the actual target hardware is not available. This enables products to be launched more quickly and economically.

The TQM5329 is suitable for a broad spectrum of applications. In addition to using it as a core for the operator terminal of devices, apparatuses and systems, a range of additional applications is possible such as intelligent POS systems, data loggers, industrial measuring control systems, data gateways, and VOIP devices.
