Scan-tastic solution for Linde

Scan-tastic solution (PresseBox) (Düsseldorf, ) Ease of use and the highest possible reliability are essential in the scanning of medical gas cylinders. Linde has introduced a standardised Barcode handheld terminal for its global project across Many sites. The device chosen was the BHT-700 range from DENSO. TTID and partners worked closely with Linde group for several months to guarantee a successful roll-out of new products

BHT-700 for the greatest possible reliability

Currently many DENSO BHT-700 units are in use at Linde in the UK with even more units expected to be rolled out in the next 18 months.

Around 2500 units have been delivered to date across Europe, South America, South Africa and Canada. They replace competitors' devices and now ensure absolute reliability in analysing medical gas cylinders. Phillip Edwards, Business Process Consultant for Information Services (IS), explains the reasons behind the changeover at Linde: "The old devices were starting to fail regularly and could not be supported, while replacements were proving difficult to source." This resulted in the decision to introduce the DENSO BHT-700, which has a proven track record over a range of applications.

It's all about the vibrations

Jacqui Vernon, IS Project Manager, highlights two main benefits of the BHT-700 that were the decisive factors in opting for this device: "Not only are they robust, but they vibrate when a scan is successful and you can scan many cylinders one after the other, no cylinders are overlooked."

Great commitment, great success

Replacing devices is not without its problems. The swap-out needed to be seamless.Phillip Edwards Explained: "The devices are scanning cylinders used for pharmaceutical products so we have to comply with the regulatory authorities. We had the expert input of David Hadfield, Healthcare Validation Manager, and a highly supportive business sponsor in Andy Clapham, Healthcare Operations Manager." IS and Healthcare also worked closely to test the devices, with Rod Wisdom and Alhpa Shah from IS making several visits to sites to ensure a smooth changeover. Each site had an expert user to help colleagues. Phillip Edwards also emphasises the perfectly-organised operation: "One shift ended, the next shift started and the cylinder fillers got on with the job."

A global standard

It is the first time the new globally-selected standard handheld for The Linde Group has been put into production. This was a great challenge that also blazed a trail for the Group. To make it happen, IS held regular conference calls to ensure suppliers worked closely together. The total commitment across the whole team ensured its success. At one point Denso flew specialist engineers from Munich and Tokyo to the US at 24 hours' notice to understand and fix an issue on the spot. This effort has paid off. The BHT terminals are operating to Linde's full satisfaction.
