Japan is one of Germany’s and Europe’s most important trading partners for nanotechnology. In Foreign Direct Investment Projects (FDI) between in the period between 2008 and 2012 Japan was ranked #4 in investments in the fields of Chemistry and Materials, following the United States, Switzerland, and before France (#5). For this reason the Ministry of Economics, Labour and Transport presents itself together with the State Initiative Nano - und Material Innovationen Niedersachsen, Ludwig Nano Präzision GmbH, TIE GmbH, VOGT Ultrasonics GmbH and Okayama University with the latest developments in the field of nanomaterials at the fair.

TIE GmbH is a German company with offices in Griesheim / Hessia and Northeim / Lower Saxony specializing in «Carbon Nanohorns (CNH)» in various forms for industrial applications. CNH is a very pure (no catalyst used), single-walled carbon material, which forms nano-scale hornlike structures derived from monolayer Carbon grids. As such, CNHs have similarities with graphene. However, due to their conical shape they cannot be found individually and always build three dimensional aggregates. One focus of current research for industrial applications is the use of CNHs as functional fillers in diverse materials such as sinter metals, thermoplastics, elastomers and resins in order to create new materials with enhanced properties. Results are for example metal sinters or resins with high friction and low abrasion properties (e.g. for use in brakes or for non-abrasive coatings) or enhanced thermoplastics for moulding technology.

Okayama University presents itself together with the Landesiniative Nano- und Materialinnovationen in form of an Initiative in the field of „Advanced Nano-carbon (ANC) material industry development“ at the nano tech fair.

Nano- und Materialinnovationen Niedersachsen e. V. is the state initiative’s supporting organization. The association sees itself as a higher-level information and communication platform and, as an innovation network, enables players from the economy and sciences the development of system partnerships, the generation of common ideas as well as innovative developments. Its appeal extends far beyond the borders of Niedersachsen. One of the association’s building blocks is to support small to medium-sized businesses of Niedersachsen in their innovation process,
i.e. in the development of new materials and production methods. The main focus is to increase performance, optimize costs and to conserve available resources.
